Energy Transition and Innovation
Equans Services is supporting Washington D.C. in a major project: converting 75,000 lighting points to connected LED by the end of 2024. This program, the largest of its kind in the United States, aims to reduce energy consumption by up to 50% and improve residents’ quality of life.
In the heart of the historic center, in front of the Washington Monument, teams are replacing old sodium bulbs with smart LED lighting. This system allows real-time remote control of each streetlight, optimizing brightness and energy use.
Technology and Smart Lighting Management
Using Cityworks and InteliLight solutions, Equans Services plans and optimizes each operation:
- Digital planning to track project progress
- Real-time monitoring of outages and brightness adjustments
- Responsive to resident requests, with rapid interventions
This smart management ensures a high-performing, reliable network tailored to urban needs.
Safety and Field Coordination
Teams, working in day and night pairs, carry out around 60 conversions per day. Each operation is secured:
- One technician working at height for the conversion
- One teammate on the ground to secure the area
With MyGeotab, Equans Services tracks vehicles in real time, including speed and safety compliance. Teams are ready to respond 24/7 in emergencies, such as an incident that cut power to 120 streetlights
THE PROJECT AT A GLANCE
- Le plus grand projet de modernisation d'un réseau d'éclairage public aux États-Unis
- Partenariat public-privé (PPP)
Environmental and Social Impact
Modernizing Washington D.C.’s public lighting will result in:
- Annual reduction of 38,000 tons of GHG emissions
- Safer streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers
- Fast interventions across all areas
At least 10% of the work is entrusted to companies employing a diverse workforce, reinforcing the project’s social impact.
A Model for Energy Transition in North America
This project combines energy savings, advanced technology, and positive social impact. By halving electricity consumption and increasing the lifespan of lighting fixtures by 2 to 5 times, Equans Services positions Washington D.C. as a successful example of energy transition.
